Viridian Gym’s real specialty is hyper-specialized team-building, not just Ground types — Blue realizes after two brutal matches that Giovanni’s gym trains Pokémon for tightly defined roles inside specific lineups, with examples like a speed-built Rhyperior, a tanky Krookodile, and members fielding multiple differently trained Flygon for different teams.
Blue concludes he cannot beat Giovanni with his current generalist roster — after talking it through with Elaine and reviewing Giovanni’s past eight-badge teams, he admits he’ll likely need retraining, new purchases, and a deliberately engineered anti-Giovanni squad rather than trying to one-shot the badge with what he already has.
Red’s absence is now both strategic and deeply personal pressure on Blue — Blue keeps spiraling from battle prep into grief over Red’s hospital state, worrying not just about losing his friend but about what happens if Rocket, rogue psychics, or political enemies move while Red is still incapacitated.
A small improvement in Red’s condition hits Blue hard because hope now feels terrifying — Aunt Laura tells him Red has been sleeping peacefully for nearly three hours without intervention and that doctors see slightly better signs, which gives Blue relief and fresh fear at the same time.
Blue ‘borrows strength’ by thinking with Red’s voice when Red can’t answer — after catching himself typing messages to Red, Blue starts using imagined back-and-forth with his friend to pressure-test team ideas, and that mental simulation helps him rediscover older roster plans and a clearer path forward.
Leaf is pulled into a high-stakes inquiry about the Dreamer and psychic manipulation — Lance, Looker, Agatha, Tsunemori, and Oak question her over her Dr. Fuji connection, reveal that 15 researchers across four Unown labs abruptly abandoned the field, then recruit her to help reach the Dreamer through her story while she negotiates for access to investigate Indigo corruption.
Blue walks into Viridian expecting another type-specialist gym and quickly realizes Giovanni’s people are doing something more advanced and more secretive. After getting humbled by veteran members using pairings like Torterra plus Quagsire and Mamoswine plus Gastrodon, he figures out their real edge: not surprise gimmicks, but whole teams of hyper-specialized Pokémon trained for one exact role in one exact lineup.
On the phone with Elaine, Blue tries to explain that this isn’t just “my Blastoise is a tank,” but “this Blastoise is the tank for the one team that needs exactly this tank.” Elaine immediately sees the catch: it’s expensive, resource-heavy, and probably a bad lesson for young trainers, but it’s also the sort of meta-strategy that separates ordinary challengers from someone who can beat the Elite Four.
The hardest conclusion lands cleanly: Blue is not beating Giovanni as-is. Elaine starts sending spreadsheets of every eight-badge Giovanni team she logged for her game, and Blue accepts that after working so hard not to buy Pokémon for most of his run, he may now need to hit the market and build with intent instead of pride.
A stray mention of flowcharts makes Blue think of Red, and the chapter suddenly opens into grief. He can’t stop picturing Red pale in the hospital bed, and his fear expands outward: if Rocket attacks again, if another psychic disaster hits, if the ninja negotiations fail, Blue may end up facing a region full of threats that a champion alone can’t solve.
Back in his room, Blue calls Aunt Laura and gets the first genuinely encouraging update in a while: Red has been sleeping peacefully for nearly three hours, and the doctors think some of his signs look better. It should make Blue feel lighter, and for a moment it does, but the chapter is brutally honest that hope can hurt too when every possibility still includes brain damage, memory loss, or Red waking up changed.
Blue throws himself into prep, comparing market listings for Flying, Water, Grass, and Ice types against Giovanni’s historical lineups: Nidoking, Rhyperior, Camerupt, Swampert, Excadrill, Garchomp, Flygon, Hippowdon, Steelix, Quagsire. He keeps accidentally trying to message Red, then finally does send him a real text — “Hey, bud. Missing you a lot tonight.” — before slipping into a familiar habit: talking strategy at Red until imagined answers start appearing.
What follows is one of the chapter’s best emotional turns: Blue more or less bootstraps Red’s voice inside his own head. The imagined argument pushes him away from obvious anti-Ground counters and back toward something smarter — not just winning the Giovanni match, but building the kind of team that can survive Victory Road and whatever comes after.
The second half shifts to Leaf entering a tense Indigo League room with Lance, Looker, Tsunemori, Agatha, and Oak, where she learns why she’s really been summoned. The Dreamer apparently spoke to Lance, and now 15 people across four Unown labs have abruptly quit or turned against the research, which makes everyone fear subtle psychic coercion on a scale that could shatter public trust.
Leaf agrees to a deep psychic examination by Agatha, partly to clear herself and partly because she needs to know whether she’s been manipulated. Agatha finds Leaf’s choices honest, and the room immediately pivots from suspicion to recruitment: they want Leaf to use her story as bait to reach the Dreamer, while Leaf coolly asks in return for access to investigate Indigo crime and corruption — a bold ask that doubles as leverage for her separate, dangerous interest in the ninja and the hybrid mystery.
